Before 2020, these two communities were counted together as one place called the Bonadelle Ranchos-Madera Ranchos Census Designated Place (CDP). In 2010, about 8,569 people lived there. For the 2020 census, the area was split into two separate CDPs: Bonadelle Ranchos and Madera Ranchos.

About Bonadelle Ranchos-Madera Ranchos

This community is found at 36°56′11″N 119°53′12″W / 36.93639°N 119.88667°W / 36.93639; -119.88667. In 2010, the entire area covered about 11.6 square miles (30.1 square kilometers) of land.

Nature and Environment

Bonadelle Ranchos is seen as a special place between the flat valley and the Sierra foothills. It's higher than most of the valley but not quite high enough to be called true foothills. About 7 miles (11 km) northeast, you can find the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains.

The area has a mix of features. The northeast part is the highest, with small hills like Adobe Hill, which is about 640 feet (195 meters) tall. Many rolling hills are found throughout the area. Several creeks flow here, like Little Dry Creek and Cottonwood Creek. These creeks usually have water during winter when it rains or snow melts from the nearby foothills.

You can also find many seasonal ponds. However, they are often too small and dry up too quickly for fun activities. The wildlife here is typical for this kind of environment. You might see animals like foxes, ground squirrels, coyotes, raccoons, and skunks. Sometimes, bobcats and mountain lions are spotted. Birds like doves, crows, ducks, and hawks also live here.

Weather and Climate

The weather in this area is a bit different from nearby cities. It can be 3 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (about 1.5 to 5.5 degrees Celsius) cooler in winter. Because the area is open, wind and storms can really affect the temperature.

The weather changes a lot throughout the year:

  • Spring (March to May) is warm and mild. Temperatures usually reach the 60s and 70s °F (15-26 °C). Nights can still be cool, sometimes in the 30s °F (around 0 °C). Many trees start to bloom in March.
  • Summer (June to early October) is very hot. Temperatures often go above 100 °F (38 °C). It's usually sunny with almost no clouds. Nights are warm, often in the high 50s or 60s °F (15-20 °C). Because there's very little rain, droughts are common, and there's a high risk of fires.
  • Fall (mid-October to November) is mild. Highs are usually in the 60s and 70s °F (15-26 °C). Fall is short, and winter weather starts to move in by the end of November. Nightly lows can vary, usually from 35 to 50 °F (2-10 °C).
  • Winter (December to March) is generally mild. The area often gets thick Tule fog, which makes it hard to see. It rains from November to March. Snow almost never falls in any noticeable amount. Winter nights can get quite cold for California, sometimes dropping to the high teens or 20s °F (around -7 to -2 °C). Frost is very common. Daytime highs are usually in the 40s–50s °F (4-15 °C). Some winter days can be very windy for weeks.

History of the Communities

The Bonadelle Ranchos area has a long history, but not all of it is well-known. John Bonadelle was the person who started the area. He owned most of the land there. Many of the streets were named by him. Sometimes, street names were even sold to people in Hollywood, who would name them after themselves. People started settling here as early as the 1940s, but a lot more people moved in during the 1970s and after.

John Bonadelle bought the land from one of the three Smith family siblings. The Smith family had split the land into three parts after their father passed away. Today, a person named Kirby Smith still owns a lot of land to the east of Bonadelle Ranchos, stretching all the way to Highway 41.

  • Madera Ranchos: This part is seen as the business and more urban area. It stretches about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) from Kensington Drive north to Highway 145. Here, you can find three gas stations and the Madera Ranchos Market, which is a main place for locals to shop. There's also a local library, a daycare, and other small shops. Recently, a Dollar General store was added. Homes in Madera Ranchos usually sit on half-acre to one-acre lots and get their water from a community well.
  • Bonadelle Ranchos: This is the more rural part of the community. It goes from Avenue 13 north to Highway 145. Most homes here are on larger lots, 2 acres (0.8 hectares) or more, and each home has its own water well. The Bonadelle 9 Volunteer Fire Station is located in this area. It's the main fire department for the community.
