Bonnie is a small village in the southern part of Jefferson County, Illinois. It's a quiet place that was home to 374 people in 2020. Bonnie is part of the larger Mount Vernon area.

History of Bonnie

The area around Bonnie has an interesting past. The first settlement nearby was called Spring Garden. It was about four miles southeast of where Bonnie is today.

Compton's Springs Resort

In the early 1800s, a man named Uriah Compton built a resort. He used the natural springs in the area. This resort was known as "Compton's Springs".

Growth and Decline of Spring Garden

In 1848, the village of Spring Garden was officially created next to the resort. It grew quickly and became the second-largest settlement in Jefferson County. By 1888, it even had its own high school!

However, things changed in 1905. A new railway, the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad, was built about three miles to the west. This railway brought new life to other areas. Businesses and people started moving away from Spring Garden. They moved to new towns that were closer to the train stations, like Bonnie and Ina. This caused Spring Garden to slowly shrink over time.

Founding of Bonnie

Bonnie grew because of the new railway. Some of the land that became Bonnie was given by George Washington Hayes (1842–1927).

Bonnie Campground

To the west of Bonnie, there is a place called the Bonnie Campground. For many years, since the late 1800s, this campground has been used for large outdoor religious gatherings.
