Borriol is a charming town and municipality in Spain. It's located in the province of Castellón, which is part of the Valencian Community. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes and rich history. About 5,300 people live in Borriol.

Discovering Borriol's Past

Borriol has a very long history, with people living here for thousands of years. We know this from old discoveries like rock paintings found in a place called l'Albaroc. These paintings show us what life might have been like a long, long time ago.

Ancient Roman Connections

The Via Augusta was an important road used by the Romans. It passed right through the Borriol area. You can still see a special Roman milestone, which was like a road sign, in the local museum. This milestone is a cool reminder of Roman times.

The Borriol Castle and Its Story

High up on a rock, you can see the remains of Borriol Castle. It looks over the whole town. In 1250, King James I of Aragon gave Borriol its own special charter. This document allowed the town to govern itself.

Over the years, the castle and land were owned by different important people and families. For a long time, most of the people living in Borriol were Muslim families. However, in 1609, these families had to leave the area.

Exploring Borriol's Geography

Borriol is nestled in a valley. It sits between two mountain ranges: the Desert de les Palmes and the Serra de Borriol. This town is in the southwest part of a region called Plana Alta.

Neighboring Towns and Landscape

Borriol shares its borders with several other towns. These include Sant Joan de Moró, Vilafamés, La Pobla Tornesa, L'Alcora, Benicàssim, and Castellón de la Plana. All these towns are in the Province of Castellón.

Because Borriol is close to Castellón de la Plana, the main city of the province, it's a lively town. Its economy is growing and changing. The area has a typical Mediterranean landscape. You'll see dry fields filled with olive and carob trees. These fields are next to the mountains of the Paraje Natural del Desierto de las Palmas. You can reach Borriol easily by using the CV-151 and CV-10 roads.

Local Streams and Water

Several small streams flow through Borriol. Some of them are called La Botalaria, La Teula, San Martí, and Codina. However, these streams often have very little water, or they might even be dry. This is because the amount of rain in the area can change a lot throughout the year.

Borriol's Economy and Work

The main way people make a living in Borriol is through farming. They mostly grow olive and carob trees. These trees don't need a lot of water, which is good for the local climate.

Growing Industries

Since Borriol is close to the provincial capital, new businesses have started to grow. These are often industries that help support bigger companies. Also, like in many towns nearby, some families earn extra money by making and selling ceramics.
