The Boston Common and Public Garden are two amazing public parks located right in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. They are next to each other and offer a fantastic green space in a busy city.
Boston Common is super old, started way back in 1634! It's one of the very first public parks in the entire country. Right next to it is the Boston Public Garden, which is a bit newer, created in 1837. This garden used to be marshland, but it was filled in to create the beautiful space you see today.
These two parks are so important that they were both added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Later, in 1987, they were each recognized as a National Historic Landmark, which means they are truly special places in American history. Even though they are close, Charles Street separates the Boston Common from the Public Garden.
What Are These Parks?
Boston Common and the Public Garden are like the lungs of Boston. They give people a place to relax, play, and enjoy nature. Even though they are side-by-side, they have different styles and histories.
Boston Common: A Historic Gathering Place
Boston Common is known for being a wide-open, grassy area. For hundreds of years, it has been a place where people gather.
A Look Back in Time
When it was first created in 1634, the Common was used by early settlers to graze their cows. It was also a training ground for soldiers and a place for public speeches. Imagine all the history that has happened there!
Fun Things to Do at Boston Common
Today, Boston Common is a popular spot for many activities. You can have a picnic, play sports, or just walk around. In the winter, the Frog Pond becomes an ice-skating rink, which is super fun! It's a great place to see how people in Boston enjoy their city.
Boston Public Garden: A Beautiful Oasis
The Boston Public Garden is different from the Common. It's more like a fancy, well-kept garden with lots of flowers, trees, and statues.
How the Garden Was Made
This garden was built on land that used to be a swamp. It was a big project to fill it in and create such a beautiful space. The Public Garden was the first botanical garden in the United States. This means it was designed to show off many different kinds of plants.
Famous Swan Boats
One of the most famous things about the Public Garden is its Swan Boats. These are small boats shaped like swans that you can ride on the pond. It's a classic Boston experience and a fun way to see the garden from the water. The Swan Boats have been around since 1877!
Statues and Flowers
As you walk through the Public Garden, you'll see many beautiful statues and colorful flower beds. It's a peaceful place to stroll and enjoy nature's beauty, especially during spring and summer when everything is in bloom.
Why Are They Historic?
Both Boston Common and the Public Garden are important because they show how cities have grown and changed over time. They also represent the idea of public spaces where everyone can go.
National Register of Historic Places
When a place is on the National Register of Historic Places, it means it's important to the history of the United States. It helps protect these places so future generations can enjoy them too.
National Historic Landmark
Being a National Historic Landmark is an even higher honor. It means the place has exceptional national importance. Boston Common and the Public Garden are recognized for their unique roles in American history and culture.
Visiting the Parks
If you ever visit Boston, these two parks are a must-see. They are right in the middle of the city, making them easy to get to. You can spend hours exploring both, enjoying the history and the beauty.
