A Look Back at Boston Ravine
The story of Boston Ravine began in the fall of 1849. A group known as the Boston Company, led by Rev. H.H. Cummings, built four cabins there. These first homes were located on the south side of a small valley, or "ravine."
By 1853, the community was growing. Several quartz mills were built. These mills were places where people crushed quartz rock to find gold. Later, a foundry was also built. A foundry is a factory where metal is melted and shaped into different items.
Boston Ravine was located about half a mile (0.8 km) from what is now Grass Valley, California. A post office served the people of Boston Ravine for a short time, from 1889 to 1890.
What Was the Weather Like?
Boston Ravine has a type of weather called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This is often shortened to "Csa" on climate maps. In this kind of climate, summers are usually warm and dry. Winters are mild and wet. This is similar to the weather found around the Mediterranean Sea.
