Boudhanath stupa

Boudhanath is a very large and important stupa (a special kind of Buddhist building) located in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. It has a huge round base, making it one of the biggest stupas in the entire world.

This amazing place is very special for Buddhist people all around the globe. It is also a very popular spot for tourism in Nepal. Sadly, it was badly damaged during the big April 2015 Nepal earthquake.

What is a Stupa?

A stupa is a dome-shaped building used by Buddhists as a place of worship and meditation. It often holds important relics or sacred items. Boudhanath is special because of its massive size and unique design. It has a large white dome and a golden spire with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha painted on it.

A Sacred Place for Buddhists

Boudhanath is one of the most sacred places for Buddhists outside of Tibet. Many pilgrims (people who travel for religious reasons) come here to pray and walk around the stupa. They walk in a clockwise direction, spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. This practice is believed to bring good luck and peace.

The stupa is surrounded by many monasteries and shops. These places offer a glimpse into the rich Buddhist culture. You can see monks in their robes and hear the sounds of prayers.

Rebuilding After the Earthquake

In April 2015, a powerful earthquake hit Nepal. Boudhanath was seriously damaged. The upper parts of the stupa, including the spire, were destroyed. However, the local community and many supporters worked together to rebuild it.

The renovation was a huge effort. It showed the strong spirit of the Nepali people. The stupa was fully restored and reopened in 2016. Today, it stands tall and beautiful once again. It continues to be a symbol of peace and hope for many.
