History of Bovina
Bovina started as a camp for the XIT Ranch, which was a very large cattle ranch. This camp was called the Hay Hook Line Camp. The ranch headquarters was one of the first buildings in the county.
In 1898, a railroad was built through the ranch. A special stop was made for cowboys to unload cottonseed, which was used to feed the cattle. Sometimes, the cottonseed would spill onto the tracks. This made the XIT cattle gather there. They would often lie down, making railroad workers get off their trains to move them.
Because of the cattle gathering, the place was first called "Bull Town." But on January 31, 1899, when a post office was opened, the name was changed to the more elegant "Bovina."
