Ancient History of the Area

The land around Bowdun Head has been important for a very long time, even before written history! People lived here thousands of years ago.

  • Pictish Hill Fort: Just north of Bowdun Head, there's a place called Dunnicaer. It's a sea stack, which is like a tall, narrow island of rock sticking out of the sea. Ancient people called the Picts built a fort on top of it! The Picts were an ancient group of people who lived in eastern and northern Scotland during the late Iron Age and early Middle Ages.
  • Bronze Age Sites: Even older than the Picts, there are signs of people from the Bronze Age (a time when people started using bronze tools and weapons). Archaeologists, who are like history detectives, have found old sites at places like Fetteresso and Spurryhillock, which are a bit inland from Bowdun Head. These sites tell us about how people lived, what tools they used, and what their communities were like thousands of years ago.
