Bowyer Edward Sparke (born April 27, 1759 – died April 4, 1836) was an important English bishop. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. He spent many years working in the church and became a bishop in different parts of England.

Life of Bowyer Edward Sparke

Bowyer Edward Sparke was born in a town called Bury St Edmunds. He went to Pembroke College, Cambridge, which is a famous university. He started there in 1777 and studied hard. He earned his first degree in 1782 and a master's degree in 1785. Later, in 1803, he received a special higher degree called a Doctor of Divinity. He also became a Fellow of his college in 1784. A Fellow is like a senior member or teacher at the college.

After his studies, he became a tutor for John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland. A tutor is a private teacher. The Duke later helped him find jobs in the church.

Sparke served as a vicar in several places. A vicar is a priest in charge of a church. He was a vicar in Scalford, Leicestershire, from 1800 to 1805. He also worked in Redmile from 1800 to 1809. Later, he was a vicar in Bristol from 1803 to 1810.

He rose through the ranks in the church. In 1803, he became the Dean of Bristol. A Dean is a senior priest in charge of a cathedral. Then, in 1809, he became the Bishop of Chester. Finally, in 1812, he became the Bishop of Ely, a very important position. He held this role until he passed away.

In 1810, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a group of very smart people who are leaders in science.

Bowyer Edward Sparke passed away at the age of 77 in London. His body was buried in a special chapel at Ely Cathedral.
