What is Boykin Mill?
The name "Boykin Mill" refers to a small community. It has several interesting old buildings:
- An old post office from around 1875.
- A general store built about 1905.
- A grist mill from around 1905, which used to grind grain.
- A mill pond, a dam, gates, and canals that helped the mill work.
A Glimpse into History
The community also features an old Baptist church built around 1827. It's designed in the Greek Revival style, which was popular for its grand, classic look. There's also a home from the mid-1800s and three houses built around 1935 for people who worked at the mill. You can also see an old smokehouse, used for preserving food.
The Battle of Boykin's Mill
A very important part of the Boykin Mill community is a battle site from the American Civil War. The Battle of Boykin's Mill happened here on April 17, 1865. This was one of the last battles of the Civil War.
The Boykin Mill Complex was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This means it's recognized as a very important historical site in the United States.
