What is a Horned Toad?
Scientists sometimes change how they classify animals. For a while, another frog called Brachytarsophrys platyparietus was thought to be a different species. But now, scientists agree it's actually the same as the Burmese horned toad. So, all the frogs once called B. platyparietus in China are now known as B. carinense.
How Big Are These Frogs?
Burmese horned toads are quite large frogs! Females are usually bigger than males. Males can grow to about 89 millimeters (about 3.5 inches) long. Females can reach up to 137 millimeters (about 5.4 inches) long. Even though the adult frogs are big, their tadpoles are much smaller, growing up to 42 millimeters (about 1.6 inches) long.
Where Do Horned Toads Live?
These frogs love to live near forest streams. This is where their babies, the tadpoles, grow up. In China, you can find many of these frogs. However, in Myanmar and Thailand, they are not as common.
Are They in Danger?
The Burmese horned toad is found in many places. So, it's not currently facing major threats. But, losing their natural homes, called habitat loss, could become a problem. Sometimes, people in China catch these frogs to eat them. For now, this is not a big threat to the species.
What Sounds Do They Make?
When a Burmese horned toad feels scared or bothered, it makes a very loud sound. It lets out a long scream that can last for 6 to 10 seconds!
