Brandeis Marshall is an American data scientist and a professor. She is the CEO of a company called DataedX. She teaches Computer Science as a full professor at Spelman College. She used to be the head of the Computer and Information Sciences department there.
Since 2019, Dr. Marshall has also been a faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. A big part of her work is helping more people get involved in the field of data science. She especially focuses on increasing the number of people from groups who are not often seen in this area. One of her projects is called 'Black Women in Data'.

Her Education
Brandeis Marshall first studied computer science and mathematics. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester in 2000. Later, she continued her studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She received her master's degree and her Ph.D. (a very high degree) in Computer Science in 2007.
Her Work and Research
In 2008, Dr. Marshall started working as a professor at Purdue University. She taught about computer and information technology, focusing on how to manage data. In 2014, she joined Spelman College as a professor of Computer Science. By 2016, she became the head of the Computer and Information Sciences department.
At Spelman, she leads the Data Analytics and Exploration (da+e) Laboratory. This lab helps understand complex networks of data to find useful information. Her research looks at how businesses use data, how social media works, and how to keep computer systems safe from cyber attacks.
The #BlackTwitter Project
One of Dr. Marshall's interesting research projects is about social media, especially Twitter. She studies how Twitter is used to help social movements within the Black community. This project looks at how hashtags like #BlackTwitter are used.
Her team uses Twitter's special tools to collect, study, and show trends in Twitter data. They try to answer questions like:
- Who uses Black Twitter?
- Who are the most influential people in this community?
- What topics and issues are they talking about?
This project also became a course for students at Spelman College. Students learned about data science by collecting and analyzing social media data. For example, they studied the #BlackGirlMagic hashtag. This course helped teach data science in a way that was meaningful to the students.
Using Data for Businesses
Dr. Marshall has also done research on something called business intelligence. This means organizing and analyzing different kinds of data to help businesses learn more. It helps companies keep up with the huge amount of data being created every day.
She has worked on many different problems. This includes finding better ways to recommend music to people. She also designs affordable ways to protect computer systems from cyber threats. Another project involved using eye tracking to help design better products for customers.
Helping More People Get into Data Science
Besides her research, Dr. Marshall works hard to help more people get into data science. She wants to increase the number of people from groups that are not often seen in this field. She also helps prepare more people for jobs that use data.
She leads a program called Data Science eXtension (DSX). This program is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. DSX trains professors at Spelman College and Morehouse College. Both are historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in Atlanta. The goal is to help these professors add data science into their classes.
DSX shows how data science connects to many different subjects. It also helps students learn about job opportunities in data science. This is important because students from these colleges are currently not well-represented in the field.
Before DSX, Dr. Marshall was involved in similar programs. She helped lead a workshop to encourage more people to participate in data mining. She also led a workshop in Atlanta called "Computer Science for All." This was part of a bigger national effort started by President Barack Obama. The goal was to build computer science skills across the country.
Dr. Marshall has also shared her knowledge to improve data science education for college students. She was part of the National Academy of Sciences' Roundtable on Data Science Postsecondary Education in 2018.
