A Special Place by the River

The museum building itself is quite unique! It used to be an old mill from the 1800s. Now, it has a modern part made of steel and glass. This new section gives you a fantastic view of the Brandywine River and the beautiful countryside around it.

Meet the Famous Wyeth Family Artists

The Wyeth family is a big part of American art history.

  • N.C. Wyeth (1882–1945) was a famous illustrator. He brought many adventure stories to life with his drawings, like Treasure Island and Kidnapped.
  • Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) was N.C.'s son. He was known for his realistic paintings of landscapes and people, often showing the quiet beauty of rural Pennsylvania and Maine.
  • Jamie Wyeth (born 1946) is Andrew's son. He continues the family's artistic tradition with his own unique style, often painting animals and portraits.

What You'll See Inside

The museum's main collection features different kinds of American art. You can see:

  • American illustration: Art used in books and magazines.
  • Still life works: Paintings of objects like fruit or flowers.
  • Landscape painting: Art showing natural scenery.

Besides the Wyeths, the museum also displays works by other important American artists. These include Jasper Francis Cropsey, Harvey Dunn, Peter Hurd, Maxfield Parrish, Howard Pyle, William Trost Richards, and Jessie Willcox Smith. The large glass lobby lets you look out at the very landscapes that inspired artists of the Brandywine School long ago.

Explore Nearby Historic Homes

The museum also lets you visit three special places nearby. These are National Historic Landmarks, meaning they are very important to American history.

  • The N. C. Wyeth House and Studio: This is where N.C. Wyeth lived and worked.
  • The Kuerner Farm: This farm inspired Andrew Wyeth for over 70 years! He created almost 1,000 artworks based on this one place.
  • The Andrew Wyeth Studio: Andrew Wyeth painted here from 1940 until just before he passed away. He and his wife, Betsy, also lived here when they were first married and raised their two sons in this home.

Beautiful Gardens and History

Outside the museum, you'll find lovely gardens filled with wildflowers and plants native to the area. The Brandywine River Museum of Art first opened in 1971. It was started thanks to the efforts of a person named "Frolic" Weymouth.
