Discovering Brayton's Past
How Brayton Got Its Name
Brayton was once known by a different name: Longreach. This name came from a large piece of land granted to a person named Peter Stuckey in the mid-1820s. He built a house there using the help of people who were forced to work, known as 'convict labour' at the time. The house was made from sandstone found in the local area.
The name of the town was changed to Brayton to avoid confusion. There is another town called Longreach in Queensland, which is a different state in Australia. The new name, Brayton, was reportedly chosen after Lily Brayton, a famous English actress and singer.
Schools in Brayton's History
Brayton had a public school for many years. It was open from 1859 until 1953. During this time, the school sometimes closed for a while. Other times, it operated as a "half-time" school. This meant that a teacher might teach at Brayton for part of the week and at another small school for the rest of the week.
