Main ingredients Bread

A bread bowl is a special kind of bread that you can eat your food out of! It's a round loaf of bread with the top cut off. The inside is carefully scooped out to make a space like a bowl. These bread bowls are usually bigger than a dinner roll. But they are smaller than a whole loaf of bread.

People use bread bowls to serve many yummy foods. These include chili and thick stews. They are also popular for New England-style clam chowder. Soups that are very watery are not usually served in bread bowls. This is because the bread would get too soggy too fast. The bread soaks up the flavor from the food inside. You can eat the bread after you finish your meal. Bread bowls are also great for serving dips. You can use the scooped-out bread pieces for dipping!

Types of Bread Bowls

There are different kinds of bread bowls around the world. Each one offers a unique taste and way to enjoy your food.

Naan Bowls

In the United Kingdom, one company made special naan bowls. Naan is a type of flatbread. These bowls were filled with chicken tikka masala. This is a popular Indian dish.

Pumpernickel Bowls

Another common type uses pumpernickel bread. Pumpernickel is a dark, heavy bread. People often serve spinach dip in a round pumpernickel loaf. The dip is usually made with a dry vegetable soup mix.

Coffin Lid (棺材板)

"Coffin lid" or "coffin bread" is a special bread bowl from Tainan, Taiwan. Its name in Chinese is guāncáibǎn. This unique dish uses Texas toast. This is a thick slice of bread. The bread is often very soft, like the kind popular in East Asia.

To make it, the bread is deep-fried until it is crispy. Then, a layer of the crust is cut off. This opens up the inside of the bread. The soft part of the bread is then dug out. This creates a space for different stews. After the stew is placed inside, the crust layer is put back on top. It looks like a lid on a box.
