Breaker Island is a small, rocky island located in Arthur Harbour. This harbor is found near Norsel Point, off the southwest coast of Anvers Island. All these places are part of the Palmer Archipelago in Antarctica. An archipelago is a group of many islands.

Scientists from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) explored and mapped Breaker Island in 1955. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) officially named the island. They chose the name "Breaker Island" because when the sea is rough, large waves called "breakers" crash against its shores.

Breaker Island: A Home for Birds

Breaker Island was once part of a special area called the Northern Arthur Harbour Important Bird Area (IBA). An IBA is a place identified by BirdLife International as very important for bird conservation. This area was chosen because it had many seabird breeding colonies. This means lots of seabirds came here to lay their eggs and raise their young.

However, the Arthur Harbour IBA was removed from the list in 2015. This means it is no longer officially recognized as an Important Bird Area.
