Bream Head facts for kids
Bream Head is a special piece of land that sticks out into the Pacific Ocean. You can find it on the east coast of the Northland area, which is in the North Island of New Zealand. This headland is at the end of a long peninsula, about 30 kilometres long. It's located southeast of a town called Whangārei.
Just 12 kilometres off the coast from Bream Head, you'll find a group of islands known as the Hen and Chicken Islands. Bream Head itself is a very noticeable bluff, standing 490 metres tall. This tall bluff is actually what's left of an ancient volcano that was active a very, very long time ago, during a period called the Miocene epoch.
Bream Head marks the northern end of a large bay called Bream Bay. It also stands at the entrance to Whangārei Harbour, which is a natural waterway that stretches towards the northwest. Across the harbour, about five kilometres to the west, you can see the Marsden Point Oil Refinery. This is a big industrial site where oil is processed.
Right next to Bream Head, on its northern side, there's a long, beautiful sandy beach. It's called Ocean Beach. It's a popular spot for people to visit and enjoy the coast.
