Culture and Interesting Sights

The Catholic Parish Church of Breitenwang

The Catholic parish church Breitenwang is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. It was built around the year 1650. Inside, you can see a beautiful painting on the ceiling of the choir room. This painting shows "the key handover to Peter." It was created in 1755 by Johann Jakob Zeiller. In the church's sacristy, there are four special silver containers. These hold holy items and show the apostles Peter and Paul. They also show two saints who protect against illness, Sebastian and Rochus.

The Mortuary Chapel and its Dance of Death

There is also a special chapel next to the church tower. It is called the mortuary chapel Ad Beatam Virginem Mariam Dolorosam. This chapel was added in 1732. Inside, you can see a unique artwork called a "dance of death." It was made by a sculptor named Thomas Seitz between 1724 and 1728. This artwork shows ten people dancing with Death. Each person is shown with things that tell you who they are. For example, you can see a Pope, a soldier, a farmer, and an emperor. The chapel also has other beautiful decorations. These include stucco reliefs, a ceiling painting by Paul Zeiller, and sculptures by Anton Sturm.
