Bremen is a special place in Germany. It is the smallest of all the German states. Bremen is known as a city-state. This means it is a state made up of just a few cities. It covers an area of about 404.23 km2 (156.1 sq mi). Around 664,000 people live in Bremen.

What is Bremen?
Bremen's full official name is "Freie Hansestadt Bremen". This translates to "Free Hanseatic City of Bremen". This name tells us a lot about its history.
The Hanseatic League
Bremen was once part of the Hanseatic League. This was a powerful group of cities in Northern Europe. These cities worked together to do a lot of trading. They sent many goods from the port of Bremen. They also bought goods from other countries through this port.
Why is it "Free"?
The word "Free" in its name is also important. It means that Bremen was independent. It did not have to follow the rules of local dukes or princes. This gave the city special rights and freedoms.
