The Story of Brentwood Glen
How Brentwood Glen Started
Back in the early 1920s, four brothers from the Ratteree family – Judge Earnest, Dr. Ira, James, and Allan – bought a large piece of land. This land was once a walnut grove. They came from the southern United States, specifically Arkansas and South Carolina, before moving to Los Angeles.
The Ratteree brothers divided their land into five parts. They called these parts the Ratteree Tract. They officially applied to create a subdivision in the mid-1920s. The brothers gave all the streets the names they still have today. However, they didn't start selling the land until after the Great Depression began.
Building the Neighborhood
The streets and sidewalks in Brentwood Glen were built in 1927. The very first house was constructed in 1932 by Harold and Helen Ives. It was located at 11344 Albata Street and is still standing today. Most of the houses in the neighborhood were built between 1935 and 1942. There was even an original pepper tree in front of 11346 Montana Ave until it was removed in 2011.
Naming Brentwood Glen
On May 20, 1957, the people living in the area had a meeting. They decided to name their community Brentwood Glen. In the same year, a road next to the San Diego Freeway was also renamed Brentwood Glen. This road was about half a mile long and was previously called Sepulveda Boulevard.
Changes Over Time
In 1975 and 1976, a special on-ramp (a road to get onto the freeway) and a sound wall were built. Later, in 1994, an off-ramp (a road to exit the freeway) at Waterford was closed after a bus accident. The on-ramp was also closed later on.
Today, Brentwood Glen is home to 560 different places to live. Most of these are single-family homes, but there are also some duplexes (homes for two families), triplexes (homes for three families), and apartment buildings.

Brentwood Glen is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. This means students in the neighborhood attend specific schools. These include Kenter Canyon Charter Elementary School, Paul Revere Charter Middle School, and Palisades Charter High School.
