Bretten Hannam facts for kids
Bretten Hannam is a Canadian screenwriter and film director. They are a Mi'kmaq person from Nova Scotia. Hannam identifies as Two-Spirit and non-binary. This means they have a unique cultural and gender identity.
Hannam studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and Dalhousie University. Early in their career, they made several short films. One of their most well-known short films was Deep End. It first showed at the Atlantic Film Festival in 2011. This film was also part of a collection called Boys on Film 9: Youth in Trouble.

Major Film Projects
North Mountain
Hannam's first full-length movie, North Mountain, came out in 2015. It premiered at the Atlantic Film Festival. Later, it had a limited release in movie theaters in 2018.
Elmiteskuatl and Art Exhibitions
In 2018, Hannam took part in an art show called Now and Then. This exhibition featured works by LGBTQ artists. It was held with the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives. Hannam's contribution was a short film named Elmiteskuatl. This film explored the interesting connection between First Nations people and the way museums and archives have been set up by others.
Wildhood and Awards
Their recent short film, Wildfire, was made with help from the Whistler Film Festival's Aboriginal Filmmaker Fellowship. It premiered at BFI Flare in 2019.
A longer movie based on Wildfire, called Wildhood, received funding in 2019. This film first showed at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Wildhood was very successful. It received six nominations at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards in 2022. Hannam was nominated for both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
Walqwin Documentary
In 2020, Hannam received a grant from the Inside Out Film and Video Festival. This money helped them finish a short documentary film called Walqwin. This film is about two-spirit culture within the Wabanaki Confederacy.
Jay Scott Prize
Hannam was honored in February 2022. They won the Toronto Film Critics Association's Jay Scott Prize. This award gives $10,000 to promising new filmmakers.
