Bria's Early Life
Bria Hartley is the daughter of Dennis and Simone Hartley. She started playing basketball when she was very young. She practiced a lot in her driveway, playing against her two older brothers. They pushed her around, but Bria says this made her a tougher player.
High School Basketball Star
Hartley went to North Babylon High School in North Babylon, New York. She started playing on the varsity team when she was only in eighth grade.
Junior Year Highlights
During her junior year, Bria was incredible. She averaged 21 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. She also had 6.0 steals and 4.7 blocks per game! She was named to the Parade All-America list. Bria also won the New York Gatorade Player of the Year award. This award is for great athletes who also do well in school and have good character.
Senior Year Success
As a senior, Bria had five games where she achieved a "triple-double" (meaning she reached double digits in three different stats like points, rebounds, and assists). She averaged 30 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game. She also had 5.9 steals and 5.0 blocks. Bria led her team to the state championship game. She scored 51 points in that game! She was again named New York Gatorade Player of the Year and New York Miss Basketball. Hartley finished her high school career as North Babylon's all-time leading scorer with 1,978 points.
Bria was chosen to play in the McDonald's All-American Game, where she scored 17 points. She also played in the WBCA High School All-America Game, scoring 19 points. Besides basketball, she also played soccer and lacrosse. Before her last high school season, Bria decided to commit to the University of Connecticut (UConn).
College Career at UConn
Bria Hartley had an amazing college career at the University of Connecticut.
Freshman Year Breakthrough
Most freshmen don't start at UConn, but Bria did. Another player, Caroline Doty, got injured, so Bria stepped up. She played more minutes than any other UConn freshman ever, with 1,209 minutes. She averaged 12.4 points per game. Bria was named the Big East Freshman of the Year. She also made the Big East all-tournament team.
Sophomore Year Improvements
Bria got even better in her second year. She averaged 14.0 points and 3.7 assists per game. She shot well, hitting 46.5% of her shots. She was named first-team All-Big East. Bria also made the BIG EAST All-Tournament team after scoring 18 points in the final game against Notre Dame. She earned a spot on the Huskies' wall of fame as one of the top players.
Junior Year Challenges and Comeback
In her junior year, Bria's stats dipped a bit. She averaged 9.2 points and 4.5 assists per game. This was partly because she was dealing with an ankle injury all year. But she came back strong in the NCAA tournament! She helped her team win the National Championship. Bria was named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament team.
Senior Year Championships
In her final year at UConn, Bria was named to the All-American Athletic first team. She averaged 16.2 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Bria was also a second-team All-American. She started every game as the Huskies won their second straight national championship.
Bria led UConn to an incredible 144–11 record during her four years. This included four Final Four appearances and two back-to-back National Championships. She is one of only two Huskies, along with Maya Moore, to have over 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists, and 200 steals. She finished her career ranking eighth in points (1,994) and fifth in assists (559). Bria was honored by being inducted into the Huskies of Honor on senior night.
