A Musical Journey Begins
When Brian was in his early twenties, he formed a music group. It was called Cachet De Vois. He was with his childhood friend LaChelle Mathenia and another member. A musician named Jay King discovered their group. Jay King was a founder of the group Club Nouveau.
Jay King helped them get a record deal in 1987. They signed with Warner Bros. Records. Brian and LaChelle moved to Sacramento, California. They recorded their first album, Personal, in 1988. The album did not become very popular. So, the group was dropped from the record label. Brian decided to stay in California. He wanted to try a solo music career. During this time, he met and learned from producer Robert Brookins.
Working with Martha Wash
Brian heard about singer Martha Wash. She was having legal issues with a group called Black Box. Brian knew she was looking for a new record deal. He wrote several songs for her. He sent these songs as demos to her music representative.
Martha Wash loved the songs. She called Brian directly. She told him he had the "spirit of Patrick Cowley". Patrick Cowley was a famous producer who worked with disco star Sylvester. Brian wrote and produced many songs for Martha Wash's first album. This helped him become a successful songwriter and producer.
Creating Hits for SWV
Before his first record deal ended, Brian was also on the same label as singer Chanté Moore. Brian had a crush on Chanté Moore. He wrote the song "Weak" because of his feelings for her. He also wrote another song called "Right Here".
These songs were first meant for Charlie Wilson. Charlie Wilson was one of Brian's favorite artists. The demo songs were shared for a few years in the early 1990s. In 1991, producer Kenny Ortiz heard them. He convinced Brian to let his R&B girl group SWV use the songs.
Brian joined SWV to produce and write for their 1992 album. The album was called It's About Time. It became very popular and was loved by critics.
Later Career and Collaborations
Later in his career, Brian kept writing and producing. He worked with many famous artists. These included Lalah Hathaway, Faith Evans, Coko, Usher, and Missy Elliott.
Around the early 2010s, producer DJ Khalil asked Brian to work with him. Khalil wanted to work together. This made Brian move from Sacramento back to Los Angeles. Because of this move, Khalil and Brian worked on Aloe Blacc's album Lift Your Spirit.
Brian has also had another career making house music. He has released several songs on the Thick Recordings label. He uses the name BAM for these releases.
