Brian Hanrahan (born March 22, 1949 – died December 20, 2010) was a famous British TV journalist. He worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as their main reporter for international news.

About Brian Hanrahan

Brian Hanrahan was born in Middlesex, England, in 1949. His father worked in construction. Brian went to St Ignatius' College and later studied Politics at the University of Essex. He even joined a drama club there!

In 1970, Brian started working at the BBC. He began by helping with photos. Soon, he became a news trainee. He then wrote news scripts and helped edit the news. He also reported from Northern Ireland during a difficult time there.

Reporting on the Falklands War

Brian Hanrahan became a war reporter for the BBC. In 1982, he joined the British forces sent to the Falkland Islands. This was during the Falklands War, when Argentina invaded the islands.

Brian was on a Royal Navy ship called the HMS Hermes. He reported on the first air attacks by Harrier jets. There were rules about what he could say. He couldn't say how many planes were used. So, he famously said, "I'm not allowed to say how many planes joined the raid, but I counted them all out, and I counted them all back." This clever line became very well-known.

Later, Brian went onto East Falkland island. He reported from the front lines while under fire. He was there when British forces took back Port Stanley on June 14, 1982. This event ended the war.

Later Career and Life

After the war, Brian Hanrahan worked as a BBC reporter in Hong Kong. He reported on how the British government was planning to hand over control of Hong Kong to China. He also visited Moscow in 1989. There, he reported on the end of the Soviet Union.

Brian Hanrahan passed away on December 20, 2010, at the age of 61. He had cancer.

Another famous journalist, Martin Bell, wrote about Brian. He said Brian was known for being humble. He also said Brian was great with words.

Brian married Honor Wilson, a radio producer, in 1986. They had a daughter named Catherine and a son named Luke.
