Brian Norwood (born August 12, 1965) is an American football coach. He currently works at UCLA. His roles there include assistant head coach, defensive backs coach, and defensive passing game coordinator. Before joining UCLA, he coached at several other universities. These include Navy, Kansas State, Tulsa, and Baylor. He also worked with famous coaches like Joe Paterno at Penn State.
Brian Norwood's Life and Career
Early Life and Playing Days
Brian Norwood grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland. His father was in the Air Force, which meant his family moved often. When Brian was in high school, his family moved to Hawaii.
He played football at the University of Hawaii. He was a cornerback and safety. In 1988, he earned a bachelor's degree in communication. After college, he worked for an airline for a year. Then, he played football in the Canadian Football League for the Calgary Stampeders. His playing career ended when he found out he had diabetes.
Coaching Journey
Norwood started his coaching career in 1990 as a graduate assistant at Arizona. He then coached at Richmond and Navy. In 2000, he coached at Texas Tech.
From 2001 to 2007, he was a coach at Penn State. He then moved to Baylor in 2008, where he became a defensive coordinator. He later became an assistant head coach there. After Baylor, he coached at Tulsa and Kansas State. In 2019, he returned to Navy as a co-defensive coordinator. Since 2020, he has been coaching at UCLA.
His Family
Brian Norwood and his wife, Tiffiney, met in high school in Hawaii. They have five children: Gabe, Jordan, Levi, Brianna, and Zac.
- Gabe Norwood played basketball for George Mason University. His team made it to the Final Four in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. He now plays professional basketball in the Philippine Basketball Association. He is also part of the Philippine national basketball team.
- Jordan Norwood played wide receiver for Penn State. He also played wide receiver for the Denver Broncos in the NFL.
- Levi Norwood played receiver for Baylor University.
- Brianna Norwood went to George Mason University. She studied sports management and was on the dance team. She worked for the Washington Nationals baseball team for three seasons.
- Zac Norwood played basketball for Midway High School in Texas.
