History of Brickell Key
How the Island Was Made
Back in 1896, a man named Henry Flagler had a deep channel dug. This channel started from the mouth of the Miami River. The digging created two new islands in the process.
Claughton Island's Development
Later, in 1943, Edward N. Claughton, Sr. bought these islands. He combined them with other land to make one big, triangle-shaped area. This new area was about 44 acres in size.
Modern Buildings on the Key
In the late 1970s, a company called Swire Properties bought most of the island from Claughton. Since then, many tall buildings have been built on Brickell Key. Some of these are among the tallest buildings in Miami. The famous Mandarin Oriental, Miami hotel is also located here. Many of these buildings went up in the 2000s, when Miami saw a lot of new condo towers.
