List of tallest buildings in Miami facts for kids

Miami, a city in Florida, U.S., has one of the country's most impressive collections of tall buildings, known as a skyline. It ranks as the third-tallest skyline in the U.S., right after New York City and Chicago. Miami is home to 439 high-rise buildings. More than 100 of these are taller than 400 feet, and 70 are taller than 491 feet.
The very tallest building in Miami is the Panorama Tower. It has 85 floors and stands 868 feet tall in Miami's Brickell area. It became the tallest building in 2017. Nine out of the ten tallest buildings in Florida are found in Miami. Overall, Miami's skyline is the fourth largest in North America and the 28th largest in the world.

Miami's Sky-High Story: A History of Tall Buildings
Miami's journey to building skyscrapers began in 1912. The first tall building was the six-story Burdine's Department Store. Later, the McAllister Hotel opened in 1919 and was the tallest until 1925. The Freedom Tower, built in 1925, is a famous early skyscraper and a symbol of the city.
Building Booms and Growth
From the mid-1990s to the late 2000s, Miami experienced its biggest building boom ever. This period was sometimes called a "Manhattanization wave," meaning Miami was growing vertically like New York City. Nearly 60 buildings taller than 492 feet were planned or under construction. Because of this, only two of the city's 25 tallest buildings were finished before the year 2000.
However, this building boom suddenly stopped around 2008. This happened when the real estate market had problems and a major economic slowdown began. By 2011, the market started to get better. New projects like Brickell House were announced. This led to a second building boom, which is still happening as of 2019. This new boom has even more proposed towers than the first one. Today, only 10 out of the 80 tallest buildings were built before 2000.
Current Tallest Buildings
The Panorama Tower in Brickell is currently the tallest completed building. It reached its full height in August 2017. Some of the tallest buildings planned for the future include One Bayfront Plaza and One Brickell City Centre. Both of these might rise over 1,000 feet!
Why Buildings Can't Be Too Tall
Building very tall structures in Miami can be tricky because of the nearby Miami International Airport (MIA). Airplanes taking off and landing fly directly over the downtown area. Because of this, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sets strict height limits for buildings in Downtown Miami. For many years, One Bayfront Plaza was the tallest building approved, at 1,049 feet. The FAA has sometimes reduced the height of proposed buildings, even "supertall" ones (over 1,000 feet).
In 2014, the FAA considered a new rule that could have greatly limited building heights around many airports, including Miami. This would have even meant changing existing buildings. Luckily, the FAA did not go through with these extreme limits. Instead, they started approving buildings up to 1,049 feet above sea level more quickly. This has allowed many new supertall projects to be planned and approved.
Miami's Tallest Buildings
This list shows the tallest buildings in Miami that are at least 400 feet tall. The height includes spires and decorative parts, but not antenna masts. An equals sign (=) means two or more buildings are the same height. The "Year" column shows when a building was finished or "topped out" (reached its full height).

Who Was Tallest When? A Timeline
Many buildings in Miami have held the title of the city's tallest. The 5-story Burdine's Department Store was the first high-rise. However, the Freedom Tower is often seen as Miami's first true skyscraper.
Between 2003 and 2008, and again from the late 2010s, Miami saw a huge amount of new building. Many new skyscrapers were planned. The Four Seasons Hotel became the tallest in 2003. In 2017, Panorama Tower took over as the tallest in both Miami and Florida. In 2022, the Waldorf Astoria Miami began construction, becoming the city's first "supertall" building over 1,000 feet.
