The city of Miami, Florida has one of the most impressive collections of tall buildings in the United States. It ranks as the third-tallest skyline in the country, right after New York City and Chicago. Miami is home to 439 high-rise buildings. More than 100 of these buildings are taller than 400 feet (122 meters), and 74 are taller than 491 feet (150 meters). The very tallest building in Miami is the Panorama Tower. It has 85 stories and stands 868 feet (265 meters) tall in Miami's Brickell area. It became the tallest building in 2017. All of the top ten tallest buildings in Florida are found in Miami. Globally, Miami's skyline is the 27th largest in the world. In North America, it ranks fourth, after New York City, Chicago, and Toronto.

Miami's Building Story
Miami's journey to having a tall skyline began in 1912. The six-story Burdine's Department Store was the first building considered a "skyscraper" in the city. Later, the McAllister Hotel opened in 1919 and was the tallest building until 1925. The Freedom Tower, built in 1925, is a famous early skyscraper and a symbol of Miami.
Building Booms
From the mid-1990s to the late 2000s, Miami experienced a huge building boom. Many people called it a "Manhattanization wave" because so many tall buildings were being planned and built, similar to New York City. Nearly 60 buildings taller than 492 feet (150 meters) were proposed or under construction. Because of this boom, only two of Miami's 25 tallest buildings were finished before the year 2000.
However, this building boom suddenly stopped around 2008. This happened when the real estate market crashed and a big economic slowdown began. By 2011, the market started to get better. New projects like Brickell House were announced. This led to a second building boom that is still happening today. This new boom has even more proposed towers than the first one from 2003 to 2010. Only 10 of the 80 tallest buildings were built before 2000, and only 18 before 2005.
Today's Tallest Buildings
The tallest completed building in Miami is still the Panorama Tower in Brickell. It reached its full height in August 2017. Some of the tallest buildings planned for the future include One Bayfront Plaza (OBP) and One Brickell City Centre (OBCC). Both of these might rise over 1,000 feet (305 meters). One Bayfront Plaza is a building with different uses, like offices and homes. It was approved in 2007. By the end of 2016, about ten "supertall" buildings (over 1,000 feet) were proposed for downtown and Brickell. These included The Towers by Foster + Partners, Waldorf Astoria Miami, and others.
Building Height Rules
Because Miami International Airport is so close, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has strict rules about how tall buildings can be in downtown Miami. For many years, One Bayfront Plaza was the tallest building ever approved, at the maximum FAA height limit of 1,049 feet (320 meters). Other buildings have since been approved at similar heights.
It is very rare for buildings to be approved at such great heights in Miami. This is because the main runways of Miami International Airport (MIA) are directly over the downtown area. The FAA sets exact height limits to keep planes safe. In 2014, the FAA considered a new rule that would have greatly reduced building heights around many airports, including Miami. This could have even forced existing buildings to be changed. Luckily, the FAA did not go forward with these extreme limits. Instead, they started approving buildings up to 1,049 feet (320 meters) more quickly. This has led to many new supertall projects being planned and approved.
Tallest Buildings in Miami
This list shows the tallest buildings in Miami that are at least 400 feet (122 meters) tall. The height includes spires and decorative parts, but not antenna masts. If a rank has an equals sign (=) next to it, it means two or more buildings are the same height. The "Year" column shows when a building was finished or reached its full height.

Approved and Proposed Buildings
This list includes buildings that the city has approved for construction and are planned to be at least 400 feet (122 meters) tall. Many of these were approved during Miami's building boom in the 2000s. They were put on hold during the economic slowdown but have been announced to start construction.
Many buildings are planned to reach the maximum height allowed in downtown Miami, which is 1,049 feet (320 meters) above sea level. This matches the height of the Waldorf Astoria Miami which is currently under construction.

Timeline of Miami's Tallest Buildings
Over the years, several buildings in Miami have held the title of the city's tallest. The 5-story Burdine's Department Store was the first high-rise. However, the Freedom Tower is often seen as Miami's first true skyscraper. From 2003 to 2008, and again from the late 2010s to early 2020s, Miami saw a huge amount of new building. Many buildings were under construction, and some planned ones could have become the tallest. But after the market crashed in 2007, only the Four Seasons Hotel (finished in 2003) held the title for a while. In 2017, Panorama Tower became the tallest in both Miami and Florida. In a second building boom from 2014 to 2017, many more skyscrapers over 800 feet (244 meters) were approved. Some of these were "supertalls" (over 1,000 feet). In 2022, the Waldorf Astoria Miami began construction, becoming the city's first supertall building to start being built, rising over 1,000 feet.
