List of tallest buildings in Toronto facts for kids
Many of the tallest buildings in Toronto are also the tallest in all of Canada. The very tallest structure in Toronto is the CN Tower. It stands at an amazing 553.3 metres (1,815 feet) tall! The CN Tower was the tallest free-standing structure on land from 1975 until 2007. However, it's not usually called a high-rise building because it doesn't have many floors that people can live or work on.
The tallest building in the city where people can live or work is First Canadian Place. It reaches 298 metres (978 feet) high in Toronto's Financial District. This building was finished in 1975. It is also the tallest building in Canada.
The story of skyscrapers in Toronto began in 1894. That's when the Beard Building was built. Many people think it was the city's first skyscraper. Toronto had its first big building boom in the late 1920s and early 1930s. During this time, many more tall buildings were built. After that, there was a quiet period from 1932 to 1964. Only one building taller than 91.5 metres (300 feet) was built during these years.
Then, the city had a second, much bigger building boom. This was busiest between 1967 and 1976. During this time, Canada's three tallest buildings were built. Six of the top ten tallest buildings (at that time) were also built. When the TD Bank Tower was finished in 1967, it was the 14th tallest building in the world. Soon after, Commerce Court West was completed in 1972. It was also the 14th tallest building in the world then. Later, Canada's current tallest building, First Canadian Place, became the eighth tallest building in the world when it was finished in 1975. After the mid-1970s, the building slowed down but continued into the early 1990s. This period ended with the building of Scotia Plaza and the TD Canada Trust Tower. These became Canada's second and third tallest buildings.
After this boom, the city had another short quiet period from 1993 to 2004. Only one new building was added to the city's top 20 tallest during this time. But by 2005, Toronto's third and biggest high-rise building boom began. This started with the completion of One King Street West. It has continued steadily ever since. Nearly 50 buildings over 152.4 metres (500 feet) tall are planned, being built, or recently finished. Out of the 21 buildings in Toronto taller than 200 metres, only seven were built before 2010.
In 2012, The St. Regis Toronto (which was called Trump International Hotel and Tower back then) was finished. Its top dome is 252 metres (827 feet) high, and its antenna reaches 277 metres (908 feet). This makes it the fourth-tallest structure in Toronto and all of Canada. In late 2014, Aura was completed. It has 78 floors and is 272 metres (892 feet) tall. It is the tallest residential building in Canada. The tallest building currently being built is The One. It will be 328.4 metres (1,077 feet) tall, and the builders want to make it even taller, at 338 metres. It will also be a residential building.
Natalie Alcoba from the National Post newspaper called this growth the "Manhattanization" of Toronto. This means Toronto is becoming very built-up, like the island of Manhattan in New York City. In just one week in 2018, the Toronto City Council approved 755 floors of new buildings in the city's downtown area. On a clear day, you can see the Toronto skyline (especially the CN Tower) from far away. This includes places like Newmarket to the north, Clarington to the east, and even Fort Niagara State Park in New York across Lake Ontario to the south.
As of January 2023, Toronto has built 81 skyscrapers. Another 36 are currently being built. Toronto also has 92 skyscrapers that are either approved or still being planned. Toronto is currently 20th in the world for the number of completed skyscrapers. It ranks third in North America and first in Canada. Toronto is also fourth in the world and first in North America for the number of skyscrapers being built.

Tallest Buildings in Toronto
This section lists 80 skyscrapers in Toronto that are at least 150 metres (492 feet) tall. The height is measured by standard rules, which include spires and architectural parts, but not antennas. If two or more buildings have the same height, they share a rank with an equal sign (=). An asterisk (*) means a building's main structure is finished, but it's not fully completed yet. The "Year" column shows when the building was finished. Tall observation towers, like the CN Tower, are included for comparison but are not ranked as they are not typical buildings.

Tallest by Pinnacle Height
Skyscrapers and other structures can also be measured by their "pinnacle height." This includes radio masts and antennas on top. Some people prefer this way of measuring because architectural features like spires can be tricky to define. The standard height (which doesn't count antennas) is also shown here for comparison.
