The Manulife Centre is a very tall building in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It's located right in the middle of the city, at the corner of Bay and Bloor streets. This area is known for its fancy shops and the cool Yorkville neighborhood.

The Manulife Centre is a "mixed-use" building. This means it has different types of spaces inside. It has a huge tower with 51 floors that are luxury homes. There's also a shorter tower and a shopping area on the ground floor and in the basement. It's a busy place where people live, shop, and work!

Building's Story: How it Began

The Manulife Centre was designed by a company called Clifford and Lawrie Architects. Building started in 1972 and finished in 1974. So, it's been around for quite a while!

The building was created for Manulife Financial, which still owns it today. When it first opened, it had some big, fancy stores like Bretton's and Creed's. Over time, these original stores closed down.

What's Inside Today?

Today, the Manulife Centre is still a popular spot for shopping and more. You can find well-known stores like Birks and Indigo Books there. A store called Bay Bloor Radio has been in the Manulife Centre since it first opened in 1974!

The Manulife Centre is also home to Canada's very first Eataly. Eataly is a huge market and restaurant that sells Italian food. You can also find a cool fashion store called Over the Rainbow and a Shoppers Drug Mart.

Getting Around the Centre

The Manulife Centre is super easy to get to because it's connected to Toronto's subway system. The Bay Station on the TTC's Line 2 Bloor–Danforth is right there. There are even underground tunnels from the Manulife Centre that lead to Bloor–Yonge, which is one of the busiest subway stations in Toronto! You can walk underground to other buildings too, like Holt Renfrew.
