List of tallest buildings in Edmonton facts for kids
This article lists the tallest buildings in Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta, Canada. Edmonton is home to many impressive skyscrapers. These tall buildings shape the city's skyline.
Edmonton has twenty-four buildings that are taller than 100 metres (330 ft) (about 328 feet). The very tallest building is the Stantec Tower. It is also the tallest building in Canada outside of Toronto. The Stantec Tower became the tallest on May 23, 2018. It took over this title from the JW Marriott Edmonton Ice District & Residences.
For many years, there was a limit on how tall buildings could be in Edmonton. This was because of planes flying in and out of the Edmonton City Centre Airport. Buildings could not go higher than about 150 metres (490 ft) (492 feet) above downtown. This rule changed when the airport closed in late 2013.
Edmonton's first real skyscraper was the CN Tower. It was built in 1966. For five years, it was the tallest building in all of Western Canada.

Building Booms in Edmonton
A big period of building tall structures started in the 1970s. This happened because of the "oil shocks" in 1973 and 1979. These events made oil prices go up a lot. Edmonton's economy relies heavily on oil. This led to many of the city's current tall buildings being built. In fact, 17 of the top 20 tallest buildings in 2019 were built during this time.
However, building almost stopped from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s. This was due to low oil prices. But then, oil prices rose sharply again from 2003 to 2008. This brought a new building boom to Alberta. New high-rise buildings started construction around 2006 or 2007. Many of these were finished even after oil prices dropped again in 2008. By 2008, Edmonton was building a lot. There was 780,000 square feet (72,000 m2) of office space being built.
As of November 2021, some construction projects have been slowed down. This is due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, Edmonton has 280 completed high-rise buildings. There are 13 more being built. Another 41 buildings are planned or approved for construction.
