Building the Stantec Tower
How the Tower Was Designed
The company Stantec designed the tower themselves. They showed the plans to the public on August 26, 2014. At first, the design was for 62 floors and 224 metres (735 ft) (735 feet) tall. But the final plan made it 66 floors and 251 metres (823 ft) (823 feet) tall.
Construction Milestones
Building work began in the fall of 2014. The deep foundations were finished, and the building started rising above ground in August 2016. A big step happened in November 2017. The tower reached its 30th floor, which was the top of the office sections.
Just 14 days before this, the JW Marriott Edmonton building next door became the tallest in Edmonton. Both buildings kept getting taller. The JW Marriott reached its full height of 192.15 metres (630.4 ft) (630 feet) in March 2018.
On May 23, 2018, the Stantec Tower added its 54th floor. This made it 197 metres (646 ft) (646 feet) tall. At this point, it became the tallest building in Edmonton. Workers continued to build the residential floors, adding about 3 metres (9.8 ft) (10 feet) each week.
Opening and Completion
The Stantec Tower officially opened on September 26, 2018. Stantec employees started moving into their offices in October 2018. On November 16, 2018, the tower was fully built to its highest point. It became the tallest building in Canada outside of Toronto.
The large crane used for building was taken down in March 2019. This was as the homes, called SKY residences, were almost ready. Residents were expected to move in starting in the fall of 2019. Later that year, some changes were made. The bottom 12 floors of the homes were turned into hotel rooms. This was because not enough apartments were sold. People who had bought homes on those floors were given new ones on higher floors. They did not have to pay extra.
Who Uses the Tower?
Many important companies have offices in the Stantec Tower. These are some of the main ones:
- Deka Immobilien - They use 29 floors.
- PwC Canada - They have two floors, covering 4,738 square metres (51,000 sq ft) (51,000 square feet).
- Dentons Canada - They moved into 3 floors (Floors 24, 25, and 26) in mid-2019.
