The Ice District is a huge sports and entertainment area in Downtown Edmonton, Canada. It covers about 10 hectares (25 acres) of land. This area is designed for many different uses, like sports, entertainment, living, and working.

The main attraction of the Ice District is Rogers Place. This is the home arena for the Edmonton Oilers, a professional ice hockey team. When it's all finished, the Ice District will be Canada's biggest area for mixed-use buildings and entertainment. The companies building this district are the Katz Group and the ONE Development Group. The name "Ice District" was created by Daryl Katz and announced in 2015.

Rogers Place is the main attraction in the Ice District. It's the home arena for the Edmonton Oilers hockey team, who play in the National Hockey League. The arena opened on September 8, 2016. It can hold 18,500 people for hockey games. Building the arena cost around $480 million.

Ford Hall Winter Garden

Ford Hall is a special indoor space called a winter garden. It's about 4,200-square-metre (45,000 sq ft) big and has a controlled temperature, so it's always comfortable. This area goes over 104 Avenue. It's a public gathering spot where people can meet up. It also connects the Edmonton LRT (light rail transit) system to the main entrance of Rogers Place. There's also a covered walkway, called a pedway, that connects to the new JW Marriott hotel. Ford Hall opened on September 8, 2016.

Public Plaza

The Ice District also has a large outdoor public plaza. This open space is about 4,600-square-metre (50,000 sq ft) in size. It's a place where people can gather, relax, and enjoy events.

Community Arena

The Edmonton Downtown Community Arena is another cool spot. It's the home arena for the MacEwan University Griffins hockey teams. The Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton Oil Kings (another hockey team) also use it for practices. This arena can seat up to 1,000 people.

Getting Around the Ice District

Pedways

The Edmonton Pedway system is being made bigger in the Ice District. These are elevated or underground walkways that connect buildings. New pedways link the Edmonton Tower, Stantec Tower, the hotel, and the arena to the existing system. This makes it easy to walk between places without going outside, especially in bad weather.

Parking

The new development is adding about 4,000 new parking spots. Plus, there are already between 5,000 and 10,000 parking spaces within a 5 to 10-minute walk from the arena and public plaza. Major roads like 104 Avenue, 101 Street, and 105 Street are important for getting to the district.

Public Transit

The main way to get around the Ice District using public transportation is through the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS). This includes bus routes and the Edmonton Light Rail Transit (LRT). The main LRT station for the district is MacEwan station, which is just north of Rogers Place. Thanks to the new pedway system, four LRT stations will have direct access to the Ice District. These are MacEwan, Bay/Enterprise, Central, and Churchill stations. Buses from nearby areas like Strathcona County Transit and St. Albert Transit also serve the district.
