Early Life and Career
Bridget Kelly was born in New York City on April 8, 1986. Her family background is a mix of Bahamian and Irish. She attended the famous Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where she developed her talents.
In 2008, her career took a big step forward when she joined Jay-Z's record label, Roc Nation. This led to many exciting opportunities. She often performed the song "Empire State of Mind" with Jay-Z, filling in for Alicia Keys. They performed together on TV shows and at major music festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo.
Kelly also toured with Jay-Z, performing in front of huge crowds around the world. This included shows in Europe and Japan, and even at a memorial service for the 9/11 victims. These performances helped introduce her to a global audience.
First EPs and Gaining Fame
In 2011, Kelly released her first extended play (EP), called Every Girl. An EP is like a short album with just a few songs. One of the most talked-about songs was "Thinking Bout Forever," which was written by the talented artist Frank Ocean.
A bit of confusion happened with this song. Frank Ocean released his own early version of the track, which made some people think Kelly's version was a cover. Kelly explained that the song was written for her, but she respected Ocean as an artist.
In 2012, she released the single "Special Delivery," followed by "Street Dreamin" in 2013, which featured rapper Kendrick Lamar. Both songs became popular on R&B radio stations.
In late 2013, Kelly released another EP titled Cut to... Bridget Kelly. She described the songs as being about love and relationships, both the good and the bad times. The EP was offered as a free download on her website.
Becoming an Independent Artist
In 2014, after six years, Bridget Kelly and Roc Nation decided to part ways. She chose to release her music as an independent artist, giving her more creative control. She began working on a new album, which she decided to call All or Nothing.
From 2017 to 2018, Kelly appeared on the TV show Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood. In 2020, she started co-hosting a podcast called See, The Thing Is. After one of the original hosts left the show due to a disagreement, Kelly continued the podcast with her remaining co-host.
