History
How Brighton Was Mapped
The land that became Brighton was first measured in September 1851. A team working for the U.S. government did this important job. In December 1853 and January 1854, another team marked the corners of each section of land. They walked through forests and waded through streams. They used tools like a chain and a compass to measure everything.
After their work, the surveyor wrote a description of the area. He said that the land was mostly flat and of good quality. There were not many streams. The streams often had Alder trees along their banks. He also noted that Hemlock trees were common. The Pine trees were not very good and were spread out.
