Life and Career Highlights

Early Life and Acting Beginnings

Brigitte Roüan was born in Toulon, France, in 1946. Her family was connected to the French Navy. Sadly, she lost her parents when she was only six years old. She spent her younger years living in places like Algeria and Senegal.

When she was 12, Brigitte moved to Paris to attend a convent school. This is a type of school often run by nuns. Her journey into acting began when she was 21, performing on stage. Her strong performances helped her get small roles in movies. She worked with famous directors like Alain Resnais, Jacques Rivette, and Bertrand Tavernier.

Becoming a Director

Brigitte Roüan didn't just act; she also became a director! She directed a short film called Grosse. This film was very successful and won a César Award in 1986. The César Awards are like the Academy Awards (Oscars) in France.

Later, she directed her first full-length movie, Overseas, in 1990. This film was also a big hit. It won the Critics' Week award at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most important film festivals in the world. In Overseas, Brigitte also acted alongside Marianne Basler and Nicole Garcia. They played sisters living in colonial North Africa during the 1950s. This means the region was controlled by a foreign country at the time.

Continuing Her Work

Brigitte continued to act in films, even while directing her own. For example, she appeared in Olivier, Olivier (1991), which was directed by Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland.

In 1998, Brigitte Roüan was chosen to be a member of the jury at the 48th Berlin International Film Festival. This means she helped decide which films would win awards at this important international festival.
