The Southern Railway (SR) built special electric trains for their busy route. These trains connected London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour. They were called different names like 4Cor, 4Res, 4Buf, and 4Gri.
Later, when these trains were owned by British Rail, the 4Cor type got a new official number. This was Class 404 in the TOPS system. TOPS is a way British Rail numbered all its trains. The name "Cor" was used before for other trains, but these 4Cor units were a new design.
