The Broad Street Baptist Church was once a church in Nottingham, England. It was a place of worship for Baptists from 1818 to 1901. Today, the building is a bar called Revolution.

History of the Church

The Broad Street Baptist Church started in 1817. It was formed after a group of people left the Stoney Street Baptist Church. Their minister, Rev. Robert Smith, led them to create a new church. New buildings for the church were built on Broad Street in 1818. A few years later, a Sunday School building was added next to it.

In 1842, another church, the George Street Particular Baptist Church, invited them to celebrate an anniversary together. This event helped the Broad Street church work more closely with other Baptist groups later on. They joined the Baptist Union, which brought many Baptist churches together.

The church also helped other Baptist churches grow. In 1859, they gave money to help build the Daybrook Baptist Church.

The Broad Street Baptist Church joined with another church, the Milton Street General Baptist chapel, in 1901. This chapel later became the Mansfield Road Baptist Church. After the merger, the Broad Street building was no longer used as a church.

What Happened to the Building?

After 1901, the church building changed its purpose. In 1903, a person named Hedley John Price turned it into a warehouse for lace. Much later, in the late 1900s, it became the Revolution bar. The old Sunday School building next door also became a bar, called Muse.

Ministers Who Served

Ministers are like leaders or pastors of a church. Here are some of the people who served as ministers at the Broad Street Baptist Church:

  • Robert Smith
  • Adam Smith
  • Richard Ingham (from 1834 to 1838)
  • W.R. Stevenson (from 1851 to 1876)

Music at the Church

For many years, the church used stringed instruments to make music during services. In 1857, they bought a harmonium, which is a type of keyboard instrument. Later, in 1869, a new pipe organ was put in. It was built by a local company called Lloyd and Dudgeon.
