Broadford is a small village in the west of County Limerick in Ireland. Its Irish name, Béal an Átha, means "the mouth of the ford". A ford is a shallow place in a river or stream where you can cross.
Broadford is part of a larger area called the Roman Catholic parish of Dromcollogher-Broadford. In 2016, a count of people called a census showed that 276 people lived in Broadford village. The wider area, known as the Broadford electoral division, had 960 people. An electoral division is a special area used for voting.
The History of Broadford Village
Broadford is a fairly new village. Mapmakers, also known as cartographers, first put it on their maps in 1837. Before it was called Broadford, the village had different names like "Killaliathan" or "Killagholehane".
Where the Old Name Came From
The older names came from the Killaliathan Church. This church is about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) south of the village. It is a very old church, built a long time ago in the Middle Ages. Today, parts of the church are still standing, but it is mostly in ruins.
