Broadmoor has its own police department, called the Broadmoor Police Department. It was started in 1948 because residents wanted faster help from the police. Before that, they relied on the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department, which was based far away.
The police department is managed by a group of three local residents called the Broadmoor Police Protection District Board of Police Commissioners. These commissioners are elected by the community every four years. In 2007, a special law was passed that officially recognized the Broadmoor Police Department as having the same legal standing as a city police department. The department has full-time and part-time police officers who work to keep the community safe.
For fire emergencies, the Colma Fire Protection District helps Broadmoor. They also provide paramedic services around the clock, every day of the year, with a paramedic always on duty.
