The Broadway Cinema is a cool movie theater in Nottingham, England. It's known as an "independent cinema," which means it's not part of a big chain.

You can find it in an area called Hockley. In 2009, a magazine called Total Film even said it was one of the best cinemas in the whole world!

Discovering Broadway Cinema's Past

The building where Broadway Cinema is today has a long history. It started as a church called the Broad Street Wesleyan Church in 1839. A person named S. S. Rawlinson designed it.

Over the years, the building changed its purpose. In the 1960s, it became an education center. Later, it was home to the Nottingham Film Society and City Lights Cinema. Finally, in 1982, it officially became the Broadway Cinema we know today.

Famous Connections and Film Fun

Broadway Cinema has hosted some exciting movie events. In 1993, it was the first place in the UK to show Pulp Fiction. This famous movie by Quentin Tarantino was shown right after it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival!

Many filmmakers have also used Broadway Cinema as their base. Director Shane Meadows worked there for many years. He still uses it for interviews. Another filmmaker, Jeanie Finlay, has edited most of her movies there. This includes her documentary about Game of Thrones, called The Last Watch.

A Big Makeover for Modern Movies

In 2006, Broadway Cinema got a huge upgrade. It received money from the National Lottery and Arts Council England. The work finished in October 2006 and cost about £6 million.

Now, the cinema has four screens. One of these screens was designed by the famous fashion designer Sir Paul Smith. It's the only cinema screen in the world designed by him! The cinema also has two bars where people can relax.

Celebrating Silent Films

From 1998 to 2008, a person named Laraine Porter was in charge of the Broadway Media Centre. She also helped start the British Silent Film Festival.

Because of this, Broadway Cinema hosted many silent film festivals between 1999 and 2008. They worked with the British Film Institute to bring these old movies to life.
