Discovering Brome Lake's Name
Have you ever wondered where the name "Brome Lake" came from? It's an interesting story!
How the Lake Got Its Name
The name Brome Lake actually comes from a larger area called Brome Township. This township was first shown on a map by Gale and Duberger way back in 1795. Not long after, the name of the township was also given to the lake.
The lake was officially called Brome Lake for the first time in 1815 by a person named Joseph Bouchette. After that, the name stuck!
Where "Brome" Comes From
The word "Brome" itself likely comes from a village in Suffolk, England, or from a castle called Brome Hall. This castle belonged to a noble family called the Cornwallis family. One famous member of this family, Charles Cornwallis, was known as Viscount Brome between 1753 and 1762. So, the lake's name connects it to a long history across the ocean!
