What is Bronllys Like?
Bronllys has gotten some new improvements recently. A bypass road was built to help traffic flow better around the village. This has made it easier for cars to get through, reducing traffic jams.
Even though Bronllys is a small village, it has useful places for people. You can find a swimming pool and a small leisure centre here. There is also a post office and a hospital in the village.
Bronllys Castle
One of the most interesting historical places in Bronllys is Bronllys Castle. It is an old fortress located south of the village, towards Talgarth. The castle was first built around the year 1100. It was started by a person named Richard Fitz Pons.
This castle was originally a "motte and bailey" type. This means it had a large earth mound (the motte) with a wooden tower on top. There was also a fenced area (the bailey) at the bottom.
By 1521, the castle was already falling apart. An old writer named John Leland wrote about its poor condition. By 1583, it was even more damaged.
Today, Cadw looks after Bronllys Castle. Cadw is an organization that protects important historical sites in Wales. You can visit the castle between April and October.
Bedo Brwynllys: A Poet from Bronllys
A Welsh poet named Bedo Brwynllys lived in Bronllys in the 1400s. He was a "bard," which is a traditional poet and storyteller. His poems are similar to those of a famous Welsh poet named Dafydd ap Gwilym.
Bedo Brwynllys mostly wrote about love and religion. He also wrote poems praising important people. For example, he wrote a poem in 1469 about Sir Richard Herbert of Coldbrook after he passed away.
How Bronllys is Governed
Bronllys is also an "electoral ward." This is an area where people vote for their local government. The Bronllys ward includes the village of Erwood.
In 2011, the total population of this ward was 1,282 people. The people in the ward elect a county councillor. This councillor represents them on the Powys County Council.
