Broomlee Lough is a beautiful lake located in Northumberland, England. It sits right at the southern edge of the Northumberland National Park. This peaceful lake is found just north of the famous Hadrian's Wall, which is a very old Roman wall. Long ago, people told stories that hidden treasure was kept deep within the waters of Broomlee Lough!
Special Animals at Broomlee Lough
Broomlee Lough is home to a very special creature called the White-clawed crayfish. Its scientific name is Austropotamobius pallipes. This crayfish is really important because it's the only type of crayfish that is naturally found in the British Isles!
Sadly, the number of White-clawed crayfish is going down across Europe and even in Great Britain. This means they are becoming rarer. In places like Northumberland National Park, these crayfish have never been super common. This is because they like specific homes, such as clear rivers, streams, and lakes that have a certain type of rock called limestone. These kinds of places are not very common in the park. Protecting Broomlee Lough helps keep these unique crayfish safe.
