Brough is a small community located on the western side of Whalsay, one of the beautiful Shetland islands in Scotland. It's part of the Nesting parish. You can find Brough southwest of Challister and north of Tripwell. Nearby to the north are Kirk Ness and the Whalsay Parish Church.

A Glimpse into Brough's Past

For a long time, fishing was the most important way for people in Brough to earn a living. The sea provided food and income for many families.

You can still find interesting historical clues in Brough. In the southern part of the village, there's a "burnt mound." This is a pile of stones that were heated and then used for cooking or bathing a very long time ago. There's also an old "horizontal mill," which is a type of watermill. It was first shown on maps way back in 1882.

Mysterious Ancient Cup Marks

One of the most fascinating things in Brough is a small hill with special markings called cup-marks. These marks are believed to be from the Bronze Age, which was thousands of years ago!

Imagine ancient people carving these into the rocks. There are two main groups of these cup-marks:

  • The upper group has about 10 cup-shaped hollows. They are quite worn down by weather. Each cup is about 2 inches wide and up to an inch deep.
  • The lower group has at least 19 cup-shaped hollows. These are a bit larger, measuring between 2.5 and 3.5 inches across and 1 to 2 inches deep.

There's also one single cup-mark found about 70 yards south of these main groups. These mysterious carvings give us a peek into the lives of people who lived in Brough long, long ago.
