Broughton is a small village located in Hamilton County, Illinois, in the United States. According to the 2020 census, about 185 people live there. It is part of the larger Mount Vernon area.
This village has a long history! It was first started in the 1720s by French explorers and traders. They called it Saint Philippe du Grand Marais, or just "St. Philippe." Later, in the early 1800s, it became known as "Rectorville." This name came from a nearby creek, which was named after John Rector, a government land surveyor.
Geography of Broughton
Broughton is located in southern Illinois. A main road, Illinois Route 142, goes through the village. This road leads north about 12 miles (19 km) to McLeansboro, which is the county seat. It also goes south about 9 miles (14 km) to Eldorado.
The village covers a total area of about 1.89 square miles (4.9 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land, with only a tiny bit being water.
The 1968 Illinois Earthquake
Broughton was very close to where a big earthquake happened in 1968. This event is known as the 1968 Illinois earthquake. It was one of the most widely felt earthquakes in the history of the United States. People felt the ground shake in large cities like St. Louis and Chicago.
