Brunete's History: A Look Back
Brunete did not have a military base. So, there was no attempt to take over the town during the start of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936. Brunete was far from the main fighting areas. These were in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, about 20 kilometers north.
Brunete During the Spanish Civil War
In October 1936, the Nationalist army approached Brunete. On November 1, 1936, the Nationalist troops took control of the town.
In the summer of 1937, the Republican army planned a surprise attack. They wanted to make the Nationalist leader, Franco, move some of his soldiers away from another battle. This would help the defenders of Santander. The attack started on July 5. By the evening of July 6, the Republicans had taken Brunete back. They said they captured 80 enemy soldiers.
The Nationalists gathered their forces again. They did move some units from the Northern Front. After about two weeks of intense fighting, Brunete was taken back by the Nationalists on July 24, 1937. For the rest of the war, Brunete stayed under Nationalist control. It was behind their front lines, about 10 kilometers from the fighting near Madrid.
