Mall History
Brunswick Square Mall first opened its doors in 1970. It was originally owned by the DeBartolo Corporation. When it first opened, its main stores were JCPenney and Bamberger's.
Changes Over Time
In 1986, the Bamberger's store changed its name. It became a Macy's store, which is a very well-known department store today.
1999 Updates
In 1999, the mall got a bit bigger. A new Barnes & Noble bookstore was added. The movie theater also grew to have 13 screens with stadium seating. This new theater space took over an old McCrory's store.
Some small food places were also added near the movie theater. These included Nathan's Famous, Ben & Jerry's, and Auntie Anne's. This helped because the mall didn't have a big food court at the time. Also in 1999, a company called Simon Property Group bought the mall.
Mall Makeover in 2000
The inside of the mall got a big makeover in October 2000. Workers installed new ceilings, brighter lights, and different flooring. They also added more skylights to let in natural light. A second main entrance was built on the west side of the mall. This new entrance was where a Kinney Shoes store used to be.
In 2011, the JCPenney store also got a fresh new look. They even added a Sephora beauty shop inside JCPenney.
New Stores and Restaurants
Many stores and restaurants have opened and closed since 2011. The movie theater, which was called Mega Movies, closed down. A new company, Starplex Cinemas, took over in 2011. Starplex also bought the rights to the Nathan's Famous and Ben & Jerry's food places. However, they later closed the Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop.
In early 2013, a new entrance and hallway were finished. This new area brought in a Panera Bread restaurant, a Tilted Kilt, and a GoWireless store.
In 2015, AMC Theatres bought out Starplex Cinemas. So, the movie theater became an AMC. Also in 2015, the Subway sandwich shop closed. A new place called Pop in Cafe opened in its spot, but it has since closed too.
Recent Changes
In 2016, Simon Property Group sold the mall to WP Glimcher. That same year, the Ruby Tuesday restaurant closed. Its space was used to open two new restaurants: Bar Louie and Red Robin. Bar Louie opened in late 2016, and Red Robin opened in August 2017.
During this time, the Rainbow store moved to a new spot next to Famous Footwear. Its old location was then used for the new Red Robin restaurant.
