Why Was This Line Built?

The Brushy Mountain Line was built quickly in early June 1864. The Confederate army created it to stop Union soldiers. These Union troops were trying to invade Atlanta as part of the Atlanta Campaign. Atlanta was a very important city during the war.

Where Was This Defense Line?

The line was located in Cobb County, Georgia. One end was at Brushy Mountain, north of Marietta. This was also southeast of a place called Big Shanty. The other end started at Lost Mountain. Later, it moved east along Mud Creek.

Who Used the Line?

Confederate General Joe Johnston and his army, called the Army of Tennessee, used this defense line. They occupied the Brushy Mountain Line from June 9 to June 18, 1864. It played a role in the battles around Atlanta.

Remembering History

Today, you can find a special marker that tells about this historical line. A Georgia state historical marker is placed on the side of U.S. 41. It is just south of Greer's Chapel and Barrett Parkway. This marker helps people remember the Brushy Mountain Line's importance.
