Bryan Todd Newland is an American lawyer and a leader for Native American communities. He worked as the Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs from 2021 to 2025. This was a very important job in the United States government. In this role, he helped manage programs and policies for Native American tribes.

Early Life and Education

Bryan Newland grew up in the Bay Mills Indian Community. This community is located in Chippewa County, Michigan. He went to Michigan State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, he studied law at the Michigan State University College of Law. He earned a Juris Doctor degree, which means he became a lawyer.

Bryan Newland's Career

Bryan Newland has held several important roles throughout his career. He has worked both within the government and for his own tribal community.

Early Government Work

From 2009 to 2012, Newland worked as a senior advisor. He advised the Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs. This role helped him learn about how the government works with Native American tribes. After this, he joined a law firm called Fletcher Law Firm in Lansing, Michigan.

Tribal Leadership Roles

Newland served as the chief judge for the Bay Mills Indian Community. He held this position from 2013 to 2017. As chief judge, he helped make sure laws were followed within his community. From 2017 to 2021, he became the tribal chair. This meant he was the main leader of the Bay Mills Indian Community. He also served on the board of regents for the Bay Mills Community College. This was from 2016 to 2021.

Joining the Interior Department

President Joe Biden officially nominated Bryan Newland for a big job. This job was to lead the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The nomination happened on April 22, 2021. Many groups supported his nomination. The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) was one of them. Members of the United States Senate Committee on Indian Affairs also supported him.

The Senate committee held meetings about his nomination on June 9, 2021. They decided to recommend him to the full Senate on July 14, 2021. The Senate then confirmed his nomination on August 7, 2021. This means they approved him for the job. Newland officially started his role in September 2021. He served in this position until January 2025.
