The Story of Bubble Up
How it Started
The name "Bubble Up" was first used in 1919. It was created by Sweet Valley Products Co. in Sandusky, Ohio. When it first came out, Bubble Up was actually advertised as a grape juice, not a lemon-lime drink! The company officially registered the name "Bubble-Up" in 1921.
A New Beginning
For many years, from 1922 to 1937, the name "Bubble-Up" wasn't really used. Then, in 1937, a man named LeRoy O. Schneeburger bought the rights to the name. He was the president of another drink company at the time.
In 1938, Mr. Schneeburger brought Bubble-Up back, but this time it was a lemon-lime drink. It was never used for grape juice again. A new company, The Bubble-Up Company, was started in St. Louis, Missouri. They began selling the drink all over the country through different bottling partners.
Changing Hands
Around 1953, The Bubble Up Company moved to Peoria, Illinois. At this time, it was owned by the O-So Grape Co. In 1959, the company registered a famous slogan: "Kiss of Lemon - Kiss of Lime."
Later, in the 1960s, the company moved to Los Angeles, California. However, the company faced some tough times and went out of business in 1970.
In 1973, a company called I.C. Industries bought Bubble Up. They wanted to make the drink popular again and even created a new logo for it in 1979.
Then, in 1987, Bubble Up was sold again, this time to the Monarch Co. They also bought Dad's Root Beer Co. The main offices for Bubble Up and Dad's Root Beer stayed in Chicago.
Finally, in 2007, Hedinger Brands LLC bought Bubble Up. They are located in Jasper, Indiana, and own the brand today.
Advertising
Bubble Up is well-known for its advertising slogan: "kiss of lemon, kiss of lime." In the 1960s, they had a catchy jingle on the radio that went, "Sugar-free Bubble Up has a pizzazz, that is what Sugar-free Bubble Up has."
